QUAL 8400, Qualitative Research Traditions | Fall 2017 | Research Proposal

  • Historical Inquiry in a Science Classroom?: Interdisciplinary Problem-Solving for Socio-Scientific Issues

    • This research proposal was created as the culminating project of the QUAL 8400 survey course. In it, I propose research similar to what I hope to do for my eventual dissertation work. I discuss the potential for integrating historical inquiry methods into a science classroom exploring socio-scientific issues. Additionally, this proposal includes a subjectivities statement and two interview protocols in the appendix.

QUAL 8410, Designing Qualitative Research | Spring 2018 | Document Analysis

  • What is expected from a clinical research coordinator?

    • A unique project I was assigned in QUAL 8410, in addition to the normal interviews, was a document analysis project. We could choose to present our analysis anyway we wanted, so I built a website. I chose to work with documents I was very familiar with so I would be able to go beyond a summary-level analysis. I used documents central to the NIH-funded Translational Workforce Development, Career Navigation System Development Project I coordinate.

EDIT 6210, Learning Environment Design | Spring 2018 | Development Project

  • SAVE4Youth: Scenario-based Authentic Virtual reality leaning Environments

    • The first SAVE4Youth project aims to assist young students in developing their ability to make safe decisions while walking on and near roadways. This is a group project, involving online and face-to-face students as the designers, and international participants as developers and research partners. My main role in the group is co-project manager, focused on aligning the instructional strategies of simulation and debriefing with our overall design. The project is in the final development stage now.

Dissertation-related Work

Socially-Responsive Problem Solving Strategies

  • I had the opportunity to present the first draft of my conceptual framework at the annual AECT Conference in Jacksonville, Florida in November of 2017. I also worked with my adviser, Dr. Choi, to continue to update the framework. My goal is to finish a publishable version of the framework by the end of the year. I am focusing on historical consciousness, a way of thinking that orients the present and future through the connection with the past, to develop strategies that will enhance problem-solving by allowing for a deeper, temporal, understanding of the problem, stakeholders, and the problem-solver.

Project Work

CTSA, Translational Workforce Development, Career Navigation System Project

  • Introduction video to the Career Navigation System

  • This NIH funded project is part of the Georgia CTSA's work, which mostly focuses on research and outreach clinical projects. A development project that implements rapid prototyping on multiple fronts is not something most people are familiar with. I created this video as a way to succinctly describe our goals for the system development and the way a targeted user may interact with it. I wrote the script based on discussions in team meetings, and used PowToon for the basic animations.

Grant Writing

  • As part of the RAIL Grant Writing Team, I participate in grant writing that supports RAIL-related projects. This year that included work on two grant proposals. The first was a proposal to NSF and focused on understanding the lack of diversity, particularly gender diversity, in cyber security. The second was also to NSF and was a proposal for post-graduate funding for a current doctoral candidate in our program, who would use the funding to continue their dissertation work.

  • Additionally, I took a more active role in preparing an internal grant proposal, the Global Research Collaboration Grant Program. I prepared materials for an in-class writing activity for the grant-writing seminar in Fall of 2017. I then took what we wrote in class, added references, and prepared it for submission. The proposal was accepted, and we will use this funding to travel to Honduras for a STEM-Integrated Robotics research and outreach project this summer.

Website Maintenance and Design

  • I am the website content manager for the RAIL Lab, the Case-Based e-Learning Group, the STEM-Integrated Robotics Group, and the currently-in-progress Health Professions Education Research Group
  • This year the Case-Based e-Learning Group website had a major re-haul. I assisted with the design and creation/migration of content.
